Poeta nacional de Escocia. Hijo de un labriego sin fortuna, conoció tempranamente las leyendas y canciones populares. La granja paterna quebró, y la misma suerte corrió otra granja que estableció después. Apuesto y animoso, protagonizó una serie de aventuras amorosas, cuyo fruto fueron varios niños; en sus poemas solía enaltecer a sus amantes. Su Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect [Poemas, principalmente en dialecto escocés] (1786) fue muy bien recibido, pero no le reportó seguridad económica; por lo que debió aceptar un empleo de recaudador de impuestos. Más tarde, comenzó a recopilar y editar cientos de canciones tradicionales escocesas para el Scots Musical Museum [Museo musical escocés] (1787–1803), de James Johnson, y la Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs [Selección de canciones escocesas originales] (1793-1818) de George Thomson. Burns escribió a su vez muchas de esas canciones, aunque no reclamó su autoría ni recibió pago por ellas. Entre sus tonadas más conocidos se encuentran "Auld Lang Syne, "Green Grow the Rashes, O, "John Anderson My Jo, "A Red, Red Rose y "Ye Banks and Braes o' Bonnie Doon. Proclamó con entera libertad sus opiniones radicales, sus simpatías por la gente común y corriente y su rebelión contra la religión y la moralidad ortodoxas.
